Silver Dollar City

Last Friday, David and I packed up the car for a day out in nearby Branson, MO.

Growing up 30 minutes north of Branson, I have frequented the tourist spot hundreds of times throughout my life most notably with visits to Silver Dollar City. As a lover of roller coasters, my mom took my brother and I throughout each year to ride roller coasters, celebrate the end of summer with friends, view craft demonstrations, and participate in the festivals — crafts, BBQ, Christmas festivals and more.

DSL Style: Resizing a Tank Top

Clearance racks are my shopping haven. I have never been much of a shopper. When I was younger I preferred to let my mother pick out my clothes. As long as I didn’t look ridiculous, I was pretty easy to shop for. Plain, colorful, and fit were my only requirements. The one place I loved to browse? Clearance racks! The best things are found on the clearance racks. Now, this is not always true. The clearance racks at Walmart are typically random crap but the clearance racks at clothing stores are gold. One of my favorite store sale racks to peruse is Kohls, especially when my mother gets an extra 30% off. Cute stuff at affordable prices? I’m there! On my shopping trip last week, I managed to find a pretty ikat shirt with sequin embellishments for only $5. There was only one problem. I loved the color and the cut of the shirt but I hated the size.

Pretty Perennials

You may remember my post about “Amping Up my Curb Appeal” last fall. I wrote about pulling all the weeds in my front garden but I didn’t tell you guys that I planted 100 bulbs after the weeds were pulled. Because the weather has been unseasonably cold here, I have been waiting on the edge of my seat for them to shoot up and bloom. That day finally came this weekend!

DIY Bird Feeder

In all my life I don’t think it has taken this long for Spring to spring. Snow, sleet, and frost has tucked itself in between beautiful sunny days for weeks. It’s really not that bad but it’s definitely confused the bulbs all over my yard and the birds that spend their days flitting around my backyard.

With warm weather in sight, I decided it is finally time to embrace Spring! What does that mean exactly? It means that my attention is turning again to my Outdoor Room. If you follow me on my Pinterest, you’ll notice that my Outdoor Wonderland board has been my main focus to plan for summer. On my constant quest to save money, I decided my first outdoor project would be a cheap one. Cheap meaning that I only spent $2.50 on the project! And that $2.50 project is DIY Bird Feeders!

Decorating on a Budget

The first thing on my mind when considering a potential project is the budget. How much money should reasonably be spent on this project? How much am I willing to spend? Is this project really necessary? Is there a cheaper way? Admittedly, I have been obsessed with saving money my entire life. When I was a kid, my dad and step-mom gave all the kids $100 to spend at the mall for Christmas. Their only rule was that we had to spend all the money that day. Such an easy gift that every kid loves right? Nope, I agonized over my purchases and fought with them in an effort to get away with saving the money. I was worried that I would purchase one thing only to find something better. (I always spent it all on candy in the end anyways. Being a kid is awesome.) Now, a decade later, I still have the same problem — spend or save?. As I decorate my first home on a shoestring budget, I prefer to stick with simplicity for my decor. Using books and special trinkets that I’ve collected throughout my entire life, I’ve styled my bookshelves with pieces that make me feel comfortable. I would categorize my style as eclectic.

This Week’s Menu

Saving money is always at the very top of my list of “Must Do’s.” I’m sure everyone has a place in their budget where they could be saving more and spending wiser. Mine has got to be food. It is so easy to come home after a day of work, bury my head in a project and forget about dinner only to end up spending way too much eating out instead. While it’s often delicious, it’s expensive and typically unhealthy. So rather than accept this fate, I decided to force my self to change it. And what better way than with a DIY project? It all started with a small bulletin board that I got 7 years ago for college.

Frosted Hyacinths

Wednesday was the official first day of spring, but to me, and I’m sure many of you, it seemed like the middle of winter. Here’s why.

DIY Mosaic Resin Lamp

My mom recently gave me this rusty, dirty lamp that had been sitting in her garage for years. During its hay day, it was displayed prominently in my mother’s living room. But, 10 years ago, it was displaced to the garage after a move into a bigger house. Rust, spiders, and other pests have had their way with it and now it’s my turn to breathe new life into this antique metal lamp.

Luckily, it still works and all the pieces are still in tact. So, with an idea in the back of my head, I purchased spray paint, mosaic tiles, and resin. Then I got to work.

Time to Thaw

Today was the first nice day in months so we decided to take advantage of it. I snapped these on a walk at the Sequiota Park in Springfield, Missouri.
